46 ladies attended the lunch. There were 31 apologies.
We are still having a bit of a problem with the seating arrangements. The “towels on deckchairs” system is not working. Jane has suggested that next time instead of trying to reserve seats, we should go through to the dining room in groups, just before 1pm. That way there should be no problems with friends being separated.
Carole Owen could not be with us as she had a cold and told us “I developed a bad cold so we decided not to visit any other old people and give it to them.” Thanks Carole!!
Carole also said that she had collected the 1964 photograph from Judith Condon. This means that once we have the 1947 photograph we will have the complete collection of photographs from 1947 to 1964. Thanks to Judith for offering the photograph.
Jean Lindsay (nee McCarthy) says she has the 1947 photograph. She just has to track it down for us.
Many more names were added to the keys of 1954 and 1958.
Two new members who attended were Rosemary Taylor from Chelmsford and Rosemary Jordan (nee Read). Always good to see new faces.
Yvonne Ward thanked all those who were responsible for organising the lunch and said the camaraderie was “smashing!”
We managed to collect a great many emails from members. This will make it much cheaper to send out our Luncheon details. At 56 pence each letter, plus paper and envelope, it will make a good saving. Jane and Judith often send in the region of 120-125 letters out twice a year.
If any member thinks they have missed leaving their email then please send it to me:
pauline@paulinedodd.com
I will send a test email to all those who put their address on the list, just to make sure I have taken them down correctly

Old Girls Lunch 17th November 2016. Our next will be on 4th May 2017
55 ladies attended the luncheon at The Burlington Hotel. There were some comments on the food. Not all of them very happy.
Congratulations to Jean Lindsay (McCarthy) who was awarded BEM for all the works she has done for many years for Clippesby Church and community work in the area.
Sadly we lost Anne Pashley, born June 5 1935, died October 7 2016
In 1959 Anne Pashley married Jack Irons, a tenor she had met at the Guildhall and with whom she occasionally performed duets. He died in 2005 and their son, Leon, died in 2013. She is survived by their daughter, Cleo.
You can read the full Obituary on our website at :
http://www.greatyarmouthgirlshighschool.co.uk/obituaries.html
There is also a clip of her singing “La Mort de Cleopatre”
Jane asked if anyone knew of Audrey Warner nee Whitfield. Her son Chris had contacted us as she had recently died and he wanted to know more about her school days. Happily we could help as Shirley Palmer remembered her from the Evacuation to Retford days, when Audrey was billeted with the Palmer family. Hopefully this will fill in a little more of Audrey’s family history for Chris.
Brenda Thompson nee Cadmore 1947-55 apologised for not being at the lunch but she had double booked. She enjoyed our website and was pleased that the Honour Boards had been found.
Jane told us that the honour boards had been found, photographed and put on the website. Many thanks to Jill Fearnley nee Stolworthy, who had brought up the subject at the April lunch. Also to Judith Condon who had followed it up and discovered where they were. Seems they now live under the stage at the Lynn Grove Academy, Gorleston.
Carole Owen was thanked and presented with a small gift of a pot plant. She had put hours of work into numbering and printing copies of the large School photographs. The 1961 photograph had been kindly loaned to her from Ann Basey. Carole has made seven magnificently clear separate pages of this, complete with numbers for identification. Almost 200 names were added to all three of the photographs -1954,1958 and 1961
A great deal of time was spent by ladies adding names to all three photographs. Once completed they will be added to the website.
Apologies for the quality of the photographs. They were taken in a hurry and names are not my forte. Would be grateful for a photography volunteer at future lunches. Our next lunch will be on 4th May 2017. Please let me know if you could help. pauline@paulinedodd.com

Photographs of 7th April 2016 Lunch at The Burlington Hotel (click on each photograph)
50 Ladies attended the April Luncheon. Once again the low number is probably because of the Easter holidays. Therefore in 2017 the date of the luncheon at The Burlington Hotel will be on May 4th .
Sadly we were informed by Anne Vafadari (nee Scamell) that her sister Sally had died:
Sally was born in 1935 and died January 2016. They came to live in Gt.Yarmouth from London in 1950. Sally had already done one year of her O level studies but had to start again at the High School as it was a different Board. Sally's main interests at School were languages and Biology. She left in 1953 to train to be a nurse at the Middlesex Hospital in London.
In 1956 she married a Gt.Yarmouth boy, Gordon Frosdick. They lived in London for many years and had three sons. Sally at times was a Dental nurse, and worked in Fortnum and Masons in Piccadilly, where she met many interesting people. When Gordon retired , they came to live in Blofield, For at least 20 years, before Sally died she was an invalid, suffering from a number of illnesses
She kept herself busy. One of her projects was raising money for the erection of a memorial to people who died in Bomb Disposal during and after the war. It was eventually erected at Eden Camp in Yorkshire
Sally was very brave and patient with her health problems and always kept interested in the Arts, politics etc.
Also since our last meeting Miss Favell (History teacher) has died : We will be writing an Obituary.
Jane O’Dell (nee Barker) reminded us that there will be a reunion of the class of 57-64 at The Georgian Town House, Norwich. Wednesday 8th June 2016 at 14.00 to partake of afternoon tea to celebrate “our joint 70th Birthday!” Full details are on the main page of the website.
It was generally agreed that we should have an obituary page on the website and will go back through the records to get this up to date.
Carole Owen has been working her magic again on the school photographs. She has completed 1954 with numbers, and most of the names. So nice to be able to pick out a number - go to the key - and find the name. She is also in the process of preparing the 1958 photograph and we were delighted to see so many people at the Memorabilia Table jotting down names. Once this is complete it will be put on to the website. Many thanks for all your hard work Carole.
Jean Lindsay (nee McCarthy) astounded us with her amazing memory and named most of those on two 1949 photographs in our album. Previously only had a date! Photographs are nice but photographs with names are so much nicer. Thank you Jean.
Jill Fearnley( nee Stolworthy) 52-57, who happened to be on my table, wondered what had happened to the Roll of Honour boards. Had they been taken to the new school in 1958? Fortunately we had youngsters on the same table who confirmed that they had been moved and hung outside the library of the new school. Judith Condon (1960-67) took it further, and on her way home visited, what is now the Lynn Grove Academy. She enquired what had happened to the boards as they were no longer in situ. The caretaker thought they could be in a shed somewhere – if indeed they had not been destroyed in the rebuild. Judith left her contact details and will hopefully hear something in the future. If they have been destroyed then we must try to either find a photograph or a list for our archive. Any suggestions or knowledge as to where they might be or where we would find a list would be much appreciated.
Those names were the pride of the school and should not be lost.
The Memorabilia Table was very busy and there were promises of many more photographs. Every old girl has at least one “snap” somewhere. I will take a copy and return the original. Better still send me an email copy. (pauline@paulinedodd.com)
Update re the Roll of Honour.
Judith Condon has been in touch with the secretary at Lynn Grove Academy and thankfully the boards are still in existence. I am making arrangements to visit and take a photograph. This will not be until after all exams are over at the end of June.
Thank you Judith, they could have ended up as firewood at sometime.

| 64 Ladies attended the lunch at The Burlington Hotel on Thursday November 12th. There was no table plan this time and the “Bags on seats” method seemed to work very well. Hopefully everyone managed to sit with whom they wanted…I did, lovely group. Sadly we have lost three members since our last get together. Paula Sandle (nee Smith) (proud to be a High School Girl) Eva Baldwin (nee Albrow) and Joy Besford (nee Farman). Our condolences to their families and friends. Jane had apologies from 33 members. . Emails from old girls Lorraine Howsam nee Frost and Caroline Fithian-Franks nee Eastwood (both 1961-65) were read out. At least one person would be in contact. I will give email addresses to anyone who would like to get in touch with them. It’s so nice when people manage to get in touch after so many years. Carole Owen has enlarged the 1954 school photograph to such an extent that you can actually recognise the students. With help from other old girls she has managed to put names to almost the entire school, an amazing feat. Well done Carole!! The photographs will be put on the website in due course to see if anyone can fill in those who are still unnamed. We heard from Nina Trick (nee Drake) that due to family commitments she felt unable to continue as a member. Nina and her sister, Jennifer, produced excellent Old Girls News Letters/brochures, for many years...we looked forward to receiving our copies, always interesting. Fact and nostalgia about the Old School, together with photos. A great deal of research went in to these productions, we thank both Nina and Jenny for all their hard work, greatly appreciated by us all. Newsletters Book Launch The food was, as usual, extremely tasty. The company was extremely entertaining and according to the decibels everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. The next lunch will be at the same venue on 7th April 2016. Please check your drawers and all those little places where old photographs are kept. I’m sure there are some wonderful memories hiding away and we would love to see them in April. |
26 th April 2015
44 Members attended, which was quite a depleted number, but it was the Easter holidays and many ladies had been looking after grandchildren. Also other commitments over Easter made it impossible for the usual members to join us.
Unfortunately Jane was not feeling too well on the day and for the first time in ages had to miss the lunch. She contacted me a few days later to say that all was well and she was feeling much better. We missed her.
Sadly, Judith reported the loss of two of our members; Rosemary Seago (nee Tilly) and Eva Baldwin (nee Albrow)
Jill Bruce celebrated the fact that it was 70 years since she started the school!
As always the food was delicious and many clean plates went back to the kitchen.
Smaller tables meant for more communication and the chatting went on long after 2.30pm, which is quite a bit later than usual. My table got through so many different aspects of our youth; outside toilets, well water, no central heating, riding on bicycles for miles in the rain and snow to get to school, no excuses in our day. None of us seemed to have suffered from it and the young people of today could never understand how we managed.
All in all it was a cosy get together. Carole Owen took some very nice photographs, with the added luxury of names. She has been designated official photographer ( I haven't told her yet!)
