Lunch at The Burlington on 13th November 2014

18/11/2014

Lunch at the Burlington Hotel was very well attended. 80 ladies sat down for lunch.

We were happy to welcome 5 new members all from the intake of 59-65.

Our table plan went a bit pear shaped but not surprising as we have been trying to get people to say who they will sit with when they send in their slips for the lunch. Some people put nothing at all so Jane had to guess, but eventually it worked out very well.

Dr.Carolyn Lynas ( nee Newton - her father taught geography at the school) asked if anyone knew of “The School Anthem” but unfortunately not a single person had. Jean Morris, who taught at the school 57-62 had not heard of it either. I will have to report back to say that we cannot help.

Irene Hadden, Sheila Blake, Paula Smith, Betty Brown and Val Clark wrote to apologise for not attending as they were not well.

Congratulations to Tully Walker who had been a Girl Guide for 70 years!

Jane then read out the list of all those who were at the lunch asking them to stand when their names were called out. It was interesting hearing the comments as this was happening as it was obvious some people had not been aware of friends who were at the lunch. We do change a lot over the course of 50-60 years!

The amazing Bunty Barker can remember the names of all her classmates…in alphabetical order! There were 32 of them intake 52-57.

Sadly, Jane had to report that Kathleen Norfolk had died. She was 98 years old and for her 90th birthday she had gone up in a balloon!

It was mentioned that “ Haig “motto was “Tyde What May” I thought it would be interesting to ask if anyone knew what the other house mottos were and so asked on Facebook if anyone could help me out. The immediate reply came back from Joann Arthur, who reminded me that I had actually put all of this information on Facebook in October 2012! Oh for a memory such as the amazing Bunty Barker!

The meal was its usual high standard and going by the buzz that went on throughout the lunch I take it that everyone enjoyed themselves.

The date of the next lunch is Thursday 9th April 2015.

For those interested and would like to test their memories:

The House System

In 1925 Miss Copeman initiated the system of 'Houses', similar to that practised by public schools.
Four 'Houses' were created, names after benefactors of the School.

Haig
'Tyde What May'
Yellow
Miss Adaline Haig Headmistress 1903-1925

Ferrier
'Keep Tryst'
Green
Councillor Ferrier, Chairman of Governors 1925-1933

Palgrave
'Cedimus Nunquam'
Blue
Sir Inglis, Palgrave Chairman of Governors 1906-1919

Worlledge
'Faire Sans Dire'
Red
Councillor Worlledge, Chairman of Governors 1919-1925

We were each allotted to a House on entering the School, siblings being automatically put in their sister's House, and we are sure you will all have memories of the rivalries between the Houses

I would appreciate a volunteer who is better than I am at taking photographs (not difficult)
It would be much better if we had names of the people in the photographs as well. I do have someone in mind :) but if anyone would really love to volunteer I would be extremely grateful.
