No. 10 April 2007
Editor's Report
The commemerative booklet went on sale at the April luncheon 2006 and we were delighted with the reception it received. We would like to thank everyone who contributed the articles, memoirs and photographs which helped to make it such a memorable record of those years and to all of you for your appreciative comments. Three hundred copies were printed and we have just a few left, available from Jane Freeman or Jenny Jackson.
Sadly we have to report that Marie Hunt, who provided so many of the magazines which were are starting point, died last year in her 90th year. She was delighted to know that the magazines, which she had looked after for so many years and all the other material which we have collected will have a permanent home in the archives at the Great Yarmouth Library.
Civic Reception for Olympic Star
Many of you will undoubtedly remember Anne Pashley who was at the school from 1949-53.
During her career as a sprinter Anne held the national 100 yards record, was part of the British Women's 4 x 200 yards relay team which broke the world record and in 1956 was a member of the British team that won the silver medal in the 4 x 100m relay at the Melbourne Olympic Games.
Anne now lives in France and in 2006 she returned to Great Yarmouth to be honoured by the town at a Civic Reception. Reunion after 40 years
Nine former pupils from Great Yarmouth High School met up for a reunion lunch. Although it was 40 years since they had left school they had no difficulty recognising each other and had lots to talk about. Angela Radmall (nee McBride) Janet Philpott (nee Leath) Jill Butler (nee Welsby Patricia Taylor(nee Knights) Angela Groves(nee Scarfe) Margaret Luckett Gray (nee Luckett) Maureen Duckett (nee Howard) Pamela Moyes (nee Bagshaw) Pamela Wells (nee Harvey).
The organiser Mrs Maureen Duckett (Mausie) said they had lots to catch up on and would be keeping in touch with each other.
Five Star Kitchen
Rita Johnson, who was at the school from 1945-51, and her fellow volunteers at 'Headway House@ have just won five stars in their council inspection.
'Headway House' is a charity catering for people who have suffered brain injury and the volunteers work tirelessly in the kitchens to provide a cooked lunch for the residents.
Many 'old girls' are involved in voluntary work of many kinds. Please let us know what you are involved in or have been involved in since leaving school. We are sure we can compile a considerable list! Photographs too please if possible.
Personal Reminiscences
Joan Waddell 1928-1936
S.Shorten (nee Marjoram) 1945-52
Christine Sadler (nee Symonds) 1961-66
