The Kindergarten 1906-1913
This part of the school was first mentioned in the magazine for 1907. Patrick Howard was welcomed to their number-co-education this early in the century! Numbers were small;it was recorded in 1914 that they had risen to thirteen children.
A picture of the lower 111rd in 1945; Joy Carter, Pam Gayler, Heather Haylett, Rosemary Whitehand, Connie Cornish Pauline Bewley, Jane Hilda, Sheila Stanley, Elizabeth Bushell, Nina Drake, Jill Hampton, Bridget Johnson, Anne Batterham, Miss Evans, Elizabeth Cooper and Janet Ellison.
The Brownie Pack
The pack was started in 1937 and was run by Brown Owl-Miss Lishman. There were four Sixes: Fairies, Elves, Pixies and Gnomes.
Does anyone have pictures of themselves as Brownies?
Memories from Retford
2000 Mrs Molly Doughty(nee Nicholls) organised a 'nostalgic' coach outing to Retford, to commemorate the 60 years since Retford had welcomed the Gt. Yarmouth evacuees. A tree was planted in Kings Park and a bench was placed close by with a plaque inscribed
Great Yarmouth Evacuees 1940-1944. Enjoy this park as we didMemories by Dorothy Capon
Dorothy Capon (now Dorothy Stevens) was a member of the PE staff from 1947-1972.
In 1947 Miss Kerr appointed me to the Physical Education department. At my interview she asked if I would be willing to teach 'Catechism' and to help with the large guide Company.
On my first morning Miss Howell presented me with a pair of tweezers. These were to remove splinters or 'shivers' from 'bottoms' after Gym lessons. They were frequently needed................
Included in the article about Miss Capon are three photographs:
School 1st Tennis Team and staff 1956
Staff Netball Team 1956
Staff Hockety Team 1956
Memories of the move to the new School at Lynn Grove in 1957, by Carole Owen(nee Dane).
The School Magazine
As you knowwe now have an almost complete set of magazines from 1907-1970. The only one missing is 1935.
1954is a mystery, can anyone throw a light on it? There was no printed magazine, but we do have a typed copy on A4 sheets. The following year Miss Brooks apologised for the lack of a proper magazine but gave no explanation. Do you know what happened?
The senior prefect was Eileen Sykes and her deputy was Ann Harboard.
The above is a precis of the Newsletter. If you would like a full copy please contact Jane Freeman
