April 2012 Lunch at the Burlington Hotel
Sheila Shorten(nee Marjoram)
Sadly, because of a senior moment I managed to miss the lunch! Not a pleasant experience. It caused Jane and her helpers a great deal of work for which I have apologised profusely! Because of that there are no photographs for this lunch.
There were 60 Old Girls at the lunch - lots of chatting and exchanging memories etc.
The "Memorabilia Table" was started and some very interesting items turned up:
GCE Olevel English Literature papers and British and European History.
Oxford School Certificate exam papers - geometry and arithmetic.
Speech Day programme 21..11.1968, 17.12.1930 and 10.12.1925.
Yellow girls Haig House navy/white - prefect colours and sash.
4th April 2002, Old Girls Lunch Menu.
Hat bands, form captain badge and others. Donated by the late Betty Wroughton.
Great Yarmouth High School guide badges c.1950.
Other exam papers.
School scarf.
That was a very good start! Hopefully we will be able to add to them.
We do have a collection of all the Great Yarmouth High School Magazines which will be kept at the Library for safekeeping. A few will be brought to the lunches for your perusal and then taken back. We have every one of them except the ever elusive 1935 copy. I wonder if it will ever be discovered?
At the next lunch on Thursday 8th November we will enjoy an after lunch speaker - "Old Girl": Betty Brown - her adventures on a Tall Ship
It was mentioned at the lunch that Anne Wyer's much loved mother, Sheila Shorten (nee Marjoram), passed away on 31st January 2012. She attended many of our twice a year lunches and will be sorely missed. She was at the school from 1944-1949. Our sincere condolences to Anne and her family.
