Book Launch April 2006
The idea for this booklet originated during research we were doing to collect material for the 'Old Girls' Newsletter. The present school in Lynn Grove had no archive material for the early years so information was sadly lacking until a telephone call from Marie Hunt revealed that she had a real treasure trove in a plastic bag! Marie was a pupil at the school from 1927 - 1936 and Head of English from 196 until she retired in 1977. She kindly donated an almost complete set of magazines dating from 1906 and a collection of newspapers which had been made by Miss Copeman, dating from 1919 - 1925. Our archives had truly begun and were soon followed by offers of magazines, photographs and memoirs from various sources.
This booklet is not intended to be a difinitive history but a look at some of the highlights of Great yarmouth Girls' High School, extracted from these sources and charting events and people that have shaped its ethos and its history. The School was a pioneer in schools for girls and remained single sex until in 1970 it became co-educational, we have therefore concentrated our efforts on the years 1893 - 1970.
Our main resource has been the magazines that were produced from 1906 to 1969; but we also wish to thank all 'Old Girls' and former Staff, who have contributed so much valuable material and memories, and Maureen Spinks (nee Coe) who gave a copy of her A level project 'A History of Great Yarmouth High School' for the website.
We hope you will enjoy reading these highlights as much as we have enjoyed preparing them.
